ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

Poverty is one of the most important social problems. There are many causes that explain this problematic; for instance, education, lack of employment, and global econimic crisis. In our case, the goverment of Costa Rica has developed several choices to reduce the negative effects of poverty, some of those politics are positive, but some others should be reformulated. The purpose of this essay is to explain my own perception about three of the major politics adopted by the goverment against poverty.
First, the goverment has been given schoolarships to high school students to avoid them quit their studies. The schoolarships try to keep the boys and girls inside the classrooms. According to the statistics, this policy has effectively reduce the dropout of students, but, in my opinion, it is necessary to establish more controls to guarrantee that schoolarships are used for its real purpose, because, in some cases, they has been used to cover personal or family needs.
Second, the goverment has been fighting against poverty by housing politics. The purpose of this is to give a decent house for poor families, but it is not a secret that people with enough money have been taken part of those benefits. In my opinion, the department in charged of living the benefits should make better research and incorporate more restrictive requirements. Also, there should be some department in charge to investigate the irregular cases.
Last, with the economical crisis, many enterprices and even the goverment, have been reducing the employs. In my opinion, these is not the only choice to avoid the problem; our legislation let’s the enterprices to develop emergency plans against the crisis, but I think that many of the people in charge of them do not know enough about this politics, so it is necessary to have more information.
In conclusion, there are many others politics adopted by the goverment against poverty, some of them are very useful, but some others need to be design again or improve to guarrantee their benefits. In my opinion, it is mandatory to create better life conditions and to avoid some other social problems. In short, there are still many actions to take and they must be establish as soon as possible.

Sherlock Holmes Vs. Paranormal Activity.

Superstition and magic have always got the attention of all the audiences. Magic is as old as human beings are. It has been always been present in all kind of civilizations, but sometimes magic can be presented in a positive or negative way. In the movies: Sherlock Holmes and Paranormal Activity, the producers tell to the audiences about a story related to black magic. These two movies show differences but also some interesting similarities. This essay has the purpose to describe both, comparisons and contrasts of different aspects; for instance, the gender and some particular situations.
In first place, I am going to mention the differences between the two movies. Whereas the movie Sherlock Holmes is developed in the old Scotland of the last century, the movie Paranormal Activity is developed in the United States of America in recent times. This difference shows us how the magic has been present in all times. In addition, while the gender of the movie Sherlock Holms is action and suspense, the gender of the movie Paranormal activity is terror. In the first case, the producers tell a story where black magic is part of the action and this makes the movie more exciting, but people do not get scared with that; instead of that, in Paranormal Activity, magic is related with the devil, and this movie creates an intense psychological perception of horror. In fact, the movie Sherlock Holmes does not show demon possession, but the film Paranormal Activity does.
Clearly, the sense of horror and terror is stronger in the second movie described. It does not happen in the first one, where magic is only an ingredient to create more intensity in the story. On the other hand, there are some interesting similarities between these movies. The first, and the most clearly is the use of the magic. In the next paragraph, I am going to describe some of these comparisons.
In both, Sherlock Holmes and Paranormal Activity, the producers tell a love story. In the first case, Sherlock Holmes felt in love of a young and pretty woman, but he does not trust on her because she belongs to the bad guys. In the other case, the story is about a couple who buys a new house and there is where all the story takes place. Also, in both movies, there are dead people. In Sherlock Holmes the bad guy dies at the end of the film, and in Paranormal Activity, Micah, who is one of the principal characters, is killed by the devil at the end of the film too. Furthermore, in both cases there are researches. In the first case, Sherlock Holmes makes an investigation about the use of black magic by some people in the city, and in Paranormal Activity, Micah makes an investigation related with demos. Certainly, both stories go around magic.
In summary, these two movies tell exciting stories if you are interesting on magic. The common point between them is the continue war between the good and the evil forces. In my own opinion, the topic is not fiction, it belongs to our reality and people can get some information about these fights reading the newspapers. Also, I think that we all have part of good and bad, it is the nature of human beings. We can create beautiful things, but also destroy them and produce a lot of pain and suffering to others. In short, both movies have differences and similarities, but the common point between them is the presence of magic.

Many people believe in UFO. It means Unidentified Flying Object according to wikipedia.com. For them, there are some other kind of lives in the universe and some of those species are visiting the earth for multiple purposes using their star ships. People who study the UFO phenomenom have even classified the star ships, so they distinguish between plates, cylinders, balloons, and triangles, depending of the form of it. Also, related with UFO, the specialists have elaborated the conspiracy theory. It tries to explains how the evidence about the existence of life out of the earth is being delete or modify by governments; the purpose is to try to hide the “true” from all of the people around the world. In this essay, I will refute some of the arguments used by the conspiracy theory to get its purpose.
First of all, one of the most important arguments to support the conspiracy theory is related with the government of the United States of America. According to noticiario.net/teoria-conspiracion.htm, the United States has a secret base in Nevada, California, called 51, where specialists do research about aliens who had come and even died in the earth; they also say that the goverment wants to get and use the technology of the star ships to get military advantages. In my own point of view, this is a nationalist argument. Many of the most important events have been related with the United States, like if the other countries in the world do not exist. There are some others like China and Rusia, who can be interested in develop alien technologies, but of course, it happens only in “America”.
Second, according to the same website indicated, the conspiracy theory says that the UFOs visit constantly the earth but the world leaders try to hide the “truth”. Also they say that those leaders are in permanent contact and get communication with the aliens. In my point of view, that idea sounds kind of paranoic. Try to think in all the world leaders join together only to hide the existence of alien lives forms it is ridiculous. They can not even join to try to solve our own problems like global warming or the need of food in Africa; nonetheless, according to the theory, they perfectly join to discuss the Ufo theme? And the worst idea: they get an agreement about it. I can not find the sense of that idea.
Finally, the conspiracy theory according to same source, says that Neil Armstrong saw a big number of alien star ships in the hide face of the moon, but of course, it has been denied because of the population can not to know about it. I should question for the purpose of those ships there; what were they doing there? They do not attack the earth, even they did not showed themselves to the people. So, there was no reason for that, just hiding? Only Armstrong could see them? Could be a hallucination?
In conclusion, there are many arguments to support the existence of aliens forms of life, but in my criteria, the conspiracy theory is not the best way to explain the phenomenon, because the theory only says why world leaders hide the phenomenon, but does not explain with scientific evidence the real existence of star ships and aliens visiting the earth for whatever they want. In my own point of view, relate the conspiracy theory with the government of the United States or with the world leaders is just the eternal discussion about the politic power. Who is the stronger? Of course, if your country has alien technology, it must be the best fighter in case of world war, but where were those weapons and technology in Irak war? The United States army use great technology in wars, but it does not seem like alien technology. In short, nowadays we can not denied or support the existence of aliens because there are not scientific researches to support those positions, instead of explaining the phenomenon pointing out some people of hiding the “truth”, the ufologist should join the evidence to show to the world the real existence of their study object.

Working out is important for everybody because of physical and psychological health, and its social benefits. Nowadays, people do not want to spend their time exercising. Usually there are many reasons to avoid exercise; for instance, jobs, school responsabilities, no free time, social life, and family obligations. That list is not over there; so there can be many other reasons for people just to avoid working out. But many of them are not concious of the amount of problems that this can produce; for example, diseases like obesity, psychological disorders like depression, and even social problems like drugs and gans that are related, in certain ways, to the lack of exercising. The purpose of this essay consists in explain some of the causes and effects related to the lack of exercise. To achieve that result, the causes and the effects has been grouped in three categories: physical, psychological and social.
Working out is a good instrument to prevent many kind of problems. First of all, we can point out the exercise as a direct responsable in the prevention of multiple physical diseases. Some of the most common are: obesity, high and low pressure, heart attack, diabetes and hypertension. Second, working out is good to prevent signs of psychological disorders such us anxiety and depression. Depression is the most common mental disorder diagnosed by the specialists. It can be produced by internal or external reasons. When it is internal, its because the brain reduces the production of serotonine; this is a chemical substance that helps to regulate the sense of humor and animic conditions. Thus, working out can help the body to keep the normal production and balance of serotonine, preventing depression. Working out is also a good technique to control some compulsive behaviors like shopping, smoking, and drinking. Finally, training the body has some social benefits, specially for teenagers and the society in general way because it helps to prevent the drugs consumption, to keep the young people away from gans and it contributes for normal growing of younger people.
Recently, we have identify in working out one positive characteristic: prevention; and we pointed out how it is important to keep not only physical and psychological health, but also, to build a better society. So we can afirm that working out is the cause of the prevention of many different kind of problems: for individuals and for the society. In the other hand, in the next paragraph we are going to explain how working out can have also positive effects when the problems described could not be avoided. To do that we are going to keep the three same groups used in the last paragraph.

Working out can also help to reduce the anxiety. Finally, when children and teenagers consume drugs or belong to a gang, many social programs to rescue them combine social assistance with exercise and the practice of sports such us soccer, basket, and others.
In conclusion, working out has many benefits and we can group them in three categories: physical, psychological and social. AFRICAN AMERICANS LEADERS
AFRICAN AMERICANS LEADERS

Life is never easy. Nowadays, we live in a very convulsive world and the society, in a general way, has lost its sense of identity. There are many people who have fought for freedom, equality, honor, justice and many other values and we just do not know them. All of this people are leaders because they are able to influence the others in a positive or negative way, with big or little actions. Usually, we hear about “white leaders” but, what about the “black leaders” Afroamerican people have fought since many many years ago to achieve an equal position in society. This essay aims to describe the actions of some of this people. They have been brave and with their behaviors they have changed the history.
In first place, it is mandatory to mention the actual President of the United States, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama. He is the president number fourty four in USA and he is very good in oratory. For the people, he has the clues to overcome a crisis: education and job opportunities. Also, this president knows the weaknesses and strengths of the people and he knows how to work with them. His goverment has attack two of the most important problems in the United States: lack of employment and health services. People love him because he is transforming the United States and he is trying to establish a society based in equality. Also, he is encouraging the young people to continue their studies and the parents to be more responsable of their children. Clearly, Mr. Barack Obama is going to change the United States.
The next leader is Mr Nelson Mandela. He was born in Mveso Umtata, Eastern Cape on July 18, 1918. It is impossible to forget he’s birthday because is the same date for me. He studied law and he was the first South African President democratically elected. He was in jail during twenty seven years, but since there, he fought against the Apartheid. It was a very aggressive racist movement who segregated color people. At the beginning, Mr. Mandela fought and protested pacefully, but the goverment became more violent and he had to use force without attempt against the innocent people. At the end, Mr. Frederick De Klerk, president of the National Party, gave him his freedom in return and fought with Mr. Mandela for equality. Both of them, gained the Nobel Price in 1993. In short, Mr. Nelson Mandela changed the history.
The last leader is Rosa Parks. Even between color people, women had to fight for a place. Mrs. Rosa Parks was born in 1913 and she died recently, in 2005. She was very important for the Civil Rights Movement in the United States of North America, and she gained this position for a very simple action: she refused to give her seat to a white person in a bus. For her behavior, Mrs. Parks went to jail. This produced a lot of civil protests. At the end, the Supreme Court decided that color people segregation was against the National Constitution, and Mrs Parks was condecorated because of her braveness. Even, Condoleza Rice said that she would not be the Secretary of State without Rosa Parks. In brief, Mrs. Rosa Parks is a very good example of courage.
In conclusion, Mr. Obama, Mr. Mandela and Mrs. Parks have been very important people because they have changed the society. Mr. Obama believes in a new and more equal society in the United States, Mr. Mandela believed in freedom and equality and, Mrs. Parks wanted just to seat in the same place of white people. With their actions, all of them continue transforming the world. They influence the children and show us that we can dream and build a new and a better world. Global warming affects to all of us. Scientifics around the world has shown that the temperature of the water and air is increasing. One of the most important cause of global warming is the CO2 in the atmosphere. This substance keeps the radiation of the sun inside the planet; thus, the temperature has been slowly increasing since many years ago. In the other hand, there are many consequences of that problem. Some of them are the increase in the ocean level, more hurricanes, storms and rains. Rivers and lakes will experiment a reduction in their levels because there will be also more evaporation; otherwise, some rivers could disappear forever. In addition, the consequences are going to affect also the people’s health. There will be more respiratory diseases, infections caused by tropical mosquitoes like dengue and malaria, and some others. But there are still many actions that we can take to prevent and for avoiding these negative consequences. For that it is necessary to reduce the use of electric energy, to recycle, to reduce the consumption of water and to use the public transportation. The most important action that we have to take, is to be conscious of this problem and try to change our disinterested minds. It concern to all people in every where. Besides, more education, specially for children, is necessary. Reducing the negative consequences, will take some long time, so that is the reason why we should start the change now.

Nowadays, there are many children who die because of guns in their houses. Parents and experts are worried about this situation and they want to know about the reasons that are increasing the statistics. Certainly children are not responsible because they are active and curious and they want to discover their world. When children are younger, they are not able to understand what a gun is and their consequences. But, the most common reason to explain these problems are those parents who have not enough care with guns inside the house. Some pieces of advice to prevent these situations are: to keep the guns under lock without bullets, to keep the bullets in a different place from the guns, and if you are cleaning it, do not get separate from the gun. Since many people have guns in their houses, parents should ask others for guns and risks, when their children go to visit their friends and go to sleep in another house. Drugs and alcohol are important reasons too. Research have shown that some accidents have occurred because adolescents had been drinking alcohol or consuming banned substances when they played with guns. Also, emotional problems such as depression can be very serious reason to explain this problematic. In order that is very necessary to stop this situation, parents should take some actions immediately. The most important is the supervision. They must know all that the children and teens do, especially, who their friends are. Also, parents must be able to detect any problem in anywhere and any time, because help can not wait. Timely action is necessary to safe the lives of our children.

Some years ago, people start to hear about globalization. According to Wikipedia, it was defined as the tendency of markets and enterprises to spread and to pass the national frontiers. Nowadays, globalization is more than only the economical activity. It implied also technologicals, socials and culturals processes; for instance, the social relations.
There are some causes that explain this new processes. First at all, people have more posibilities to access to the Internet and use the electronic communication systems. Second, there are new websites such as hi5, twitter, and facebook; they promote the establishment and development of the relations of the people who use those medias. Third, the complex of the modern world implies that the people must communicate using these systems, especially those who work in offices. Last, the electronic communication can be considered like a culture or a new mode.
Three of the major benefits that we could identify are: the growning of social nets users; improve communication for people with no skills in personal interaction, promote fast and easy communication between people at low cost.
On the other hand, when people exceed the use of internet, they could reduce their abilities and skills for social interaction; furthermore, people could be isolated and experiment emotional disorders. These negative consequences could impact in their normal lives and even in their jobs.
In summary, internet represents a new communication tool that brings people wherever they are, but the use of this tool requires a proper balance for avoiding the negative consequences described. Accordingly, these suggestions can help to eliminate the risk to lose the natural ability of the human beings for interaction.

The immigration is a politic topic that has important consequences to the economic and social life of a country. Every year thousands of people travel from a country to another to establish their lives there. Sometimes, these people travel alone, but, in other cases, they do it with their families. For that reason, the country must be prepare to receive all the new people and face all the challenges of this situation. Some causes of the immigration are based in politic conflicts, economical reasons, labor choices or studdy opportunities. Some of the challenges for the countries are the healthy services, housing facilities, education and the lack of employment. Next, I will refer both, the causes and challenges mentioned.
Sometimes people must leave their countries for politic reasons; for example, in Venezuela there is a very turbulent political life because of Chaves’ goverment. He has reduced the civil liberties, and many people feel opressed by him and the military. In other cases, the reasons are economical or based in labor reasons; for example, many nicaraguans come to Costa Rica to improve their own and personal financial situation and to get better life conditions. But, not always immigration has a bad cause, some people travel to study in the universities of other countries and grow up in their professional and work lives.
In the other hand, we find the challenges for the countries that must receive this people. In first place, they must improve the healthy services because immigration is one of the most important causes of new diseases; for example, when the scientifics discovered the AH1N1 many airlines stopped to travel to Mexico, and that sttopped the immigration. Housing facilities is one of the most important challenges, too, because a lot of the people who migrate to another country have no money and then, they have to live in very poor conditions. The last mentioned challenges are education for children and adults and overcome the lack of employment. This countries must consider in their financial situation the necesary resources to face them.
In conclusion, immigration affects all the countries in the world. For politicians, it is important to have in mind that the immigrants are persons and they must be treated with the due respect to their lives and human rights, so they must guarantee them the elementary conditions for a dignified life.

POVERTY IN COSTA RICA

During 2009, the poverty and the lack of employment in Costa Rica has grown and this is the consequence of many reasons. According to a research of the Census and Statistics National Institute, poverty represents the 18.5% of the population, and the lack of employ is the 7.5%; therefore, both poverty and lack of employment, has grown 0.8% and 2.9% related to the 2008 statistics. This situation is the product of many factors, for example, the inflation, the financial crisis, the nicaraguan immigration, poor education, and others. In the first case, the inflation limits the possibility of consumption, so, it produces other negative consequences for social life like crimes. The financial crisis has beaten the global economic and this has affected some countries with more or less intensity. In Costa Rica, one of the most important consequences of the financial crisis has been the increase in the interest rates for housing loan. In the other hand, the immigration is very important too, because this is one of the most affected part of the population. Most of the Nicaraguans, who immigrate to Costa Rica, are looking for opportunities and better life conditions because they do not have them in their own country. Finally, people without formal education are not eligible for good jobs, so they must conform with a regular kind of life. In conclusion, we can identify many reasons that contribute to increase poverty in Costa Rica and most of them are linked with the economical situation. In my opinion, the goverment has an important job to do, but at the end the power of changing depends of each person. Costa Rica is a country of opportunities, but you have to decide if you take them or leave them.

Domestic violence is one of the most important problems that the next goverment must attack. Many women had died and the statistics continue growing. The authorities have been creating laws since many years ago, but they have not resolve the problem. In this essay, I am going to explain three posible ways to attack this situation: education, prevention, and resources.
In the first side, it should be more education about personal knowledge for children. Children should be educated about values, how to treat the other people, and how to control their own emotions (self-control techniques). Otherwise, when they grow up, they will not know how to resolve their personal problems and this could affect their own families. In contrast, a good education will improve their skills for social relationships.
Furthermore, there is the prevention. This is not an specific responsability of the goverment. All the society must participate actively designing prevention strategies to avoid the domestic violence. It can be done by social programs in schools, public libraries to inform the people about their rights.
Finally, it is necessary to have more resources and “politic will”. More judges and cops are necessary to stop domestic violence. The efforts must be coordinated between institutions to get the maximum potencial against this battle.
Although, domestic violence is a never ending problem, but if we all fight against this situation, we can reduce the negative effects and build a better society with more and better men and women, who are concious of their important role in society. The children are the most important in this moment, because they are able to make the change for the future, but all of that depends on you and me.
